Sign shop software or a tradie job app?

Ask for job management software in Australia and you'll be pointed at AroFlo, Tradify, ServiceM8 or simPRO. They're good products, and plenty of sign businesses use one. They were built for trades whose work happens at the customer's site: plumbers, electricians, HVAC, maintenance crews. A sign shop is a small manufacturer first. The job is made in your workshop from sheets, rolls and machine time, signed off as artwork, and only then installed. This page explains where that difference shows up, and when a tradie app is still the better choice. What we say about those products is from their own published material and independent Australian comparisons, as reviewed September 2026.

Where the difference shows up: pricing the job

Tradie job apps are built around a price list, labour rates and site time, which suits a job priced as call-out, hours and parts. A sign is priced from what it consumes. A 2400 × 1200 ACM panel uses a whole sheet unless the offcut is really reusable. Printed vinyl carries bleed and waste, a router charges setup plus run minutes, and laminate, application and install all stack on top.

Sign OS prices every product from a recipe: substrates by the sheet or roll, machine minutes, labour, waste and markup, calculated the same way on every quote. A tradie app can hold a sign as a price-list item, but someone still has to work out what that item should cost, usually in a spreadsheet beside it.

  • ✓Materials priced from sheets and rolls actually used, not a flat item price
  • ✓Router, printer and laminator time charged by the minute, setup and run separately
  • ✓Sizes and options change the price automatically, every time
  • ✓Quoted against actual on every finished job, so the recipe gets better

Where the difference shows up: the work in between

Between the quote and the install, a sign shop does work a site trade doesn't: artwork, proofs, customer sign-off, production across several machines, and buying substrate and media for the job. Tradie apps are strongest on dispatching people to sites, mobile job cards, timesheets, forms and compliance. Sign OS is built around the workshop in between: versioned artwork proofs the customer approves in a browser, production boards and schedules, purchase orders raised from what a job is short, then dispatch, install and invoicing off the same record.

  • ✓Versioned artwork proofs with customer sign-off before production
  • ✓Production boards and scheduling for the workshop, not only the van
  • ✓Purchase orders raised from a job's material shortfall
  • ✓Dispatch, install and delivery dockets on the same job
  • ✓Two-way Xero and QuickBooks sync; MYOB built, not switched on

Where a tradie job app is the better choice

If most of your work is on site rather than in the workshop, a field-service app may suit you better than a sign MIS. That covers sign maintenance and relamping, electrical sign servicing, install-only crews working from other people's artwork, and businesses with large field teams, recurring service schedules or heavy safety and compliance paperwork. Independent Australian comparisons generally put ServiceM8 and Tradify at small teams wanting simple scheduling and invoicing, and AroFlo and simPRO at larger trade businesses with inventory, compliance and project needs. Those are real strengths, and Sign OS doesn't try to match them all.

  • ✓Mostly site work: maintenance, relamping, electrical sign servicing
  • ✓Install-only businesses fitting signs someone else made
  • ✓Large field teams, recurring service contracts or asset registers
  • ✓Heavy site safety and compliance paperwork as the core of the job

When both make sense

Some shops make signs and also run a real field-service side. The honest test is where your margin is won or lost. If it's in the quote and the workshop (material yield, machine time, getting artwork right the first time), that's what Sign OS is built for. If it's in getting the right person to the right site with the right paperwork, look hard at a field-service app. Bring your three hardest recent jobs to either trial, not your easiest, and see which one prices and runs them without a spreadsheet on the side.

Switching is a trial, not a project

You don't migrate to Sign OS — you trial it in parallel. Bulk CSV import brings customers, materials and suppliers across in an afternoon; the shared catalogue gives you a head start on products; and your next few new quotes run in Sign OS while old jobs finish where they are. If it doesn't earn its keep in 30 days, you've lost nothing — the demo is free and doesn't ask for a card.

  • ✓Bulk CSV import: customers, materials, suppliers
  • ✓Shared global catalogue of materials, machines and processes
  • ✓Run in parallel — no cut-over day, no consultants
  • ✓Free 30-day demo, no card, cancel by simply stopping

Frequently asked questions

Can I use AroFlo, Tradify, ServiceM8 or simPRO for a sign shop?
Yes, and some sign businesses do, especially ones that are mostly site work. The gap usually shows in pricing: those apps price from a price list and labour, while a made sign is priced from sheets, rolls and machine time. Shops that manufacture most of what they sell tend to keep a pricing spreadsheet beside a tradie app, which is the job a sign MIS like Sign OS does itself.
What's the difference between a sign MIS and job management software?
Job management software is built around sending people to sites: scheduling, mobile job cards, timesheets and invoicing. A sign MIS is built around making the product: recipe-based quoting from materials and machine time, artwork proofs, workshop production, purchasing, then install and invoicing on the same record.
Does Sign OS work with Xero like the tradie apps do?
Yes. Two-way Xero and QuickBooks sync is live: invoices go across and payment status comes back. The MYOB connection is built and tested but not switched on yet, because MYOB charges for developer access.
